You Can Get Healthy Food in a SNAP

Farmers Market

JACKSON, Miss. — Some big changes have taken place with the SNAP program.  That’s what used to be called food stamps.

You can now use the card they give you at the Farmer’s Market, “for fruits and vegetables, or could be meats – locally grown foods,” according to Kevin Concannon with the US Department of Agriculture.

And he says that’s a pretty BIG deal for the state with the nation’s biggest obesity rate.  “Our goal in all of that is to get people, and support people to eat healthier.”

So far more than 140 Farmer’s Markets across the state can now accept the EBT card.  They have signs posted.

More than 660,000 Mississippians receive SNAP benefits
