JACKSON, Miss. – Getting your aging parents to give up their driving privilege is likely easier said than done. But getting older comes with changes in physical and mental abilities that can challenge a person’s ability to continue to drive safely.
The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) has chosen the first week in December as Older Driver Safety Awareness Week. “AOTA.org is their website. And on their website, each day this week they are going to highlight different aspects of older driver safety that you can view and follow along with each day,” said Mississippi Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Michael Flood.
To help ensure transportation barriers don’t restrict Mississippians from remaining active in their communities, Flood said MDOT offers options to residents of all ages who want to get around on state roadways. “Especially older people who just don’t have the means or support structure, or family members who can take them to the store, or to the doctor or whatever.”
