A child is safe and a man is in custody following what appeared to be a hostage situation in Yazoo County.
Yazoo County Sheriff Jeremy McCoy reports that deputies were dispatched to a residence on Highland Drive at 2:30 a.m. in response to a domestic violence call. An unidentified female told authorities that she had been assaulted by her husband who was in the home with their sleeping nine-year-old son.
Police made contact with the unidentified male subject and he promptly locked himself in the house with the child still inside. According to the sheriff, the man refused to exit the home and would not let the child outside.
Officials with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation were notified of the incident and sent hostage negotiators as well as S.W.AT. members to the scene. Negotiators were able to successfully convince the subject to exit the residence with the child. The man was then placed under arrest.
An ongoing investigation is underway into the incident.
