MONROE, La.–A wrong-way wreck Saturday night on Interstate 20 near Monroe, La., left two people dead and a Mississippi man charged with vehicular homicide. Jorge Benavides, 41, of Oxford, was released from the hospital Monday and taken to jail.
The wreck happened about 11 p.m. when Benavides’ truck hit a Mustang carrying three people who were on their way home from the fair, said Louisiana State Police.
Killed were Thomas Williams, 20, of Delhi, La., and Jamerro May, 19, of Monroe. Another man who was also in the Mustang was still in the hospital with serious and possibly life-threatening injuries.
“It’s still under investigation. As far as we know now, he was driving the wrong way in the lane,” trooper Michael Reichardt, with Louisiana State Police, told KNOE-TV in Monroe.
Troopers believe Benavides was drunk when the wreck happened. He is being charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, driving the wrong way, driving without a license and vehicle negligent injury.
A GoFundME account has been set up to help the families of the victims.
