JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Senate has confirmed Carey Wright as state superintendent of education.
A half dozen senators voted not to approve her for the job, expressing concern over her support of Common Core standards and questioning where her values line up with Mississippi.
Before being hired to come to Jackson, Wright worked as a school administrator in Washington D.C. and Maryland. She was named to lead the Mississippi Department of Education last fall.
During Tuesday’s confirmation hearing Senate Education Committee Chairman Gray Tollison, R-Oxford, said Wright has a lot of experience in high performing school districts and a no nonsense approach to improving student achievement.
Wright now becomes Mississippi’s first woman state education superintendent.
