When fans show up to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday for the Ole Miss football team’s recently revamped spring game, they will be graced by the presence of a true American legend.
Head football coach Lane Kiffin announced Tuesday that among the festivities being debuted as part of the “Grove Bowl Games” will be a hot dog-eating competition headlined by no other than world champion Joey Chestnut.
How did Kiffin make this possible? In typical fashion, the football mastermind took to social media and direct messaged the 16-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion and asked him to come to Oxford.
“It should be exciting for people to watch and come see. I think it will be pretty cool for our fans,” Kiffin said.
Another shakeup to the scrimmage will be a collection of 7-on-7 football matchups between the Red team under the leadership of quarterback Jaxson Dart and the Navy team being led by defensive lineman J.J. Pegues. There will also be skills challenges somewhat resembling what the NFL has gone to instead of its typical Pro Bowl, including an obstacle course and dunk contest.

Fraternities and sororities at the university will also be involved in the events with a captain representing each chapter. Kiffin is hopeful that fans and students show up in droves to support the atypical outing to wrap up the Rebels’ spring football practices.
“I want the fans to be there, especially the students,” Kiffin said. “We want a student section just like there is on game day.”
The Grove Bowl Games will begin at 3 p.m. CT. Admission is free of charge.
