A woman has been arrested after a hit-and-run involving a school bus in Lowndes County.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. when a Honda driven by Ashley Marie Waddell, 34, collided with the rear of a bus on Jess Lyons Road in Columbus. Waddell is accused of leaving the scene of the accident before law enforcement arrived.
Around five students were aboard the school bus at the time, but nobody was injured. Police were able to locate the suspect on Spruill Road in Caledonia where she was taken into custody.
Waddell is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and not having insurance. Authorities report that a child was present with Waddell at the time of her arrest. However, law enforcement did not confirm whether or not the child was in the suspect’s vehicle when the accident took place.
Another collision involving a school bus occurred on Highway 69 South around the same time the first accident happened. Police said the bus and a car sideswiped one another as they were traveling in opposite directions. Approximately 30 pupils were aboard the bus, but no injuries were reported. No arrests have been announced in connection with the incident.
