Although Southern Miss football’s spring game ended in a tie Saturday, it was the first time fans got a glimpse into what the on-field product under new head coach Charles Huff will look like.
In front of a decent crowd at M.M. Roberts Stadium, the Golden Eagles took the field under sunny skies split into two teams: black and white. The scrimmage featured four quarters that were five minutes each with running clocks.

The first offensive spark of the day came in the second quarter as former Mr. Louisiana quarterback Landry Lyddy found Madison native Davis Dalton in the back of the end zone for a five-yard score, giving the black squad a 7-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, the white team got on the board when West native John White hit Bralon Brown on a 10-yard pass to tie the game. The game ended in a tie as there was no scoring in the fourth quarter with both defenses looking stout.
“What an unbelievable day. I gratefully appreciate our fans who showed up today, and we have worked on getting things to the ‘To the Top’ standard since we got here,” Huff said afterward, referencing the university’s motto. “Our intent for the day was met. We got out of this day healthy and went through a full gameday operations that’s all new to these guys.”

Saturday’s scrimmage marked the end of the spring practice period for Southern Miss after going through 15 practices. With a new-look roster, the new frontman is pleased with how far the team has come.
“I think we’re ahead of anywhere I’ve been at this time. From the 15 practices we’ve had, there has been a really good progression,” Huff said.
Huff was hired in December away from Marshall, where he led the Thundering Herd to a Sun Belt championship. Southern Miss will open the 2025 season at home against Mississippi State.
