It was a successful weekend of college baseball in Mississippi as the state’s three major programs closed out weekends against nonconference foes.
In Oxford and Starkville, Ole Miss (12-5) and Mississippi State (12-4) brought out the brooms for clean sweeps. Southern Miss (10-6), on the other hand, did not get the sweep, but the Golden Eagles won yet another series against a tough nonconference foe.
Ole Miss vs. Morehead State
Game one (Ole Miss 10, Morehead State 3)
Recap: Ole Miss reached home plate in six of nine innings to methodically dominate game one of the final series ahead of SEC play.
Winning pitcher: Gunnar Dennis — Five strikeouts recorded, but five hits and three runs surrendered in five innings pitched.
Impact batter: Ethan Lege — Three hits, one home run, and three RBIs.
Game two (Ole Miss 13, Morehead State 1)
Recap: A perfect combination of quality hitting and dominant pitching led the way for Ole Miss to take the series against Morehead State in just seven innings on Saturday.
Winning pitcher: Liam Doyle — Eight strikeouts and just one run allowed on three hits through 3.1 innings pitched.
Impact batter: Ethan Lege — Three hits, one score, and three RBIs.
Game three (Ole Miss 6, Morehead State 5)
Recap: The Rebels scored six runs in the first four innings and held on to complete the sweep despite the Eagles scoring five unanswered down the stretch.
Winning pitcher: Grayson Saunier — Three strikeouts amassed and just three hits allowed through five innings pitched in the sweep-earner.
Impact batter: Andrew Fischer — Two hits, one home run, two RBIs.
Mississippi State vs. Evansville
Game one (Mississippi State 5, Evansville 2)
Recap: A dominant outing from ace pitcher Nate Dohm and a decent showing from the offense were enough for Mississippi State to take care of business in the series opener.
Winning pitcher: Nate Dohm — 10 strikeouts recorded and only two earned runs surrendered off of seven hits through 6.1 innings pitched
Impact batter: Dakota Jordan — Four hits, one home run, four RBIs.
Game two (Mississippi State 8, Evansville 3)
Recap: The Bulldogs pieced together eight runs in five of the first six innings while holding the Aces scoreless in that span to take control and win the series.
Winning pitcher: Khal Stephen — Three strikeouts and only one hit allowed in six innings pitched.
Impact batter: Dakota Jordan — Two hits, one home run, and four RBIs.
Game three (Mississippi State 13, Evansville 3)
Recap: A five-run bottom of the first gave Mississippi State offensive momentum the team would carry throughout the game to earn back-to-back sweeps.
Winning pitcher: Jurrangelo Cijntje — 10 strikeouts amassed, but three earned runs surrendered from five hits through six innings pitched.
Impact batter: Connor Hujsak — Three hits, three scores, three RBIs.
Southern Miss at Louisiana Tech
Game one (Southern Miss 9, Louisiana Tech 4)
Recap: While the two teams had nearly the same amount of hits, Southern Miss had better at-bats and capitalized on a few La. Tech errors to earn win one on the road.
Winning pitcher: Nikko Mazza — Seven strikeouts recorded and just one earned run allowed on six hits through five innings pitched.
Impact batter: Billy Butler — Three hits, two home runs, and four RBIs.
Game two (Southern Miss 11, Louisiana Tech 3)
Recap: Up 5-3 in the top of the ninth, the Golden Eagles scored a remarkable six insurance runs to put things away and win the series in enemy territory.
Winning pitcher: Billy Oldham — Seven strikeouts recorded, but three runs allowed off of seven hits in six innings pitched.
Impact batter: Lawson Odom — One hit, one score, and three RBI in the series winner.
Game three (Southern Miss 11, Louisiana Tech 18)
Recap: The Bulldogs found a hot bat in Sunday’s contest, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, to salvage the series.
Losing pitcher: JW Armistead — Two earned runs given up in 0.1 innings pitched. His brother, Will Armistead, got the start, striking out six batters, but surrendering four runs from four hits.
Impact batter: Cole McConnell (Louisiana Tech) — Three hits, one home run, and four RBIs.
