BILOXI, Miss– After a long battle to keep the casino, Margaritaville says goodbye to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
There was excitement in Mississippi when Margaritaville announced they’d be building in Biloxi. The brand made famous by Southern Miss alum Jimmy Buffett launched a Mississippi Gulf Coast location in 2012. Monday night that Margaritaville closed at 10pm for the last time.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission says each casino has to have a hotel with at least 200 rooms. Margaritaville did not have a hotel and was already suffering financially when the Commission signed that into the requirements.
The management at Margaritaville in Biloxi tried to persuade the landlords to build a hotel. Margaritaville managers were going to make an announcement Friday about whether or not they would stay open, but when they saw there was no middle ground, they were forced to close the doors.
Mike Cavanaugh, the attorney for MVB holdings which runs Margaritaville, tells the Sun-Herald that employees will continue to be paid until September 19th.
