Wallabies come to the Hattiesburg Zoo

The Hattiesburg Zoo added an Australian exhibit on February 16, the fourth continent to be added.

The “Wallaby Walkabout” exhibit is barrier-free, so people can be one-on-one with the animals. Visitors are instructed to stay on the sidewalk, and let the animals approach them. Wallabies, who are compared to small kangaroos, are timid at first.

The exhibit not only includes four wallabies, but also a kunekune pig and two emus. More wallabies will be added to the exhibit in the next few months, and they plan to breed more from there. There are three male wallabies and one female.

“We are thrilled about the continued renovations and expansions at the Hattiesburg Zoo, including Wallaby Walkabout. We are looking forward to telling visitors about it as well as the Zoo’s other wonderful attractions and exhibits,” said Paige Crane, the Director of Communication for VisitHATTIESBURG.

The Zoo is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and admission is $5 for ages 2 years and older.
