HATTIESBURG, Miss. – An Eagle Alert was in effect at USM’s campus Thursday. A student was sent to the hospital. Black Ballard, 22, appeared to have shot himself in the leg. He is currently in serious condition at a hospital.
“All indications are that it was accidental, self inflicted. There was no other person involved,” said USM spokesperson Van Arnold.
According to police Ballard was not in violation of state law by having a gun on campus because he was over the age of 21. He also had an enhancement to his concealed firearms permit. He could still face university discipline.
