Update:

After a remarkable comeback against Arizona State this afternoon, Southern Miss’ season came to end with a 6-4 loss to LSU.

The Golden Eagles led 4-3 until the Tigers plated 3 runs in the 7th inning to take a 6-4 lead that they would hold on to the rest of the way.

LSU advances out of the Baton Rouge Regional.

Original Story:

Trailing Arizona State 12-6 heading into the 8th inning, things looked bleak for Southern Miss, but a 2-RBI single from Gabe Montenegro in the bottom of the 9th completed a comeback to keep their season alive.

On Friday, USM rolled over the Sun Devils. Today, ASU scored 4 runs in the 1st inning and led 10-2 at the end of the top of the 5th, and it appeared they were ready to exact their revenge on the Golden Eagles.

In the bottom of the 5th, USM was able to trim the lead with 4 runs of their own. After two ASU runs in the 6th, the Southern Miss bullpen was able to keep the Sun Devils off the board as they mounted their comeback.

In the 8th, Matthew Guidry, who hit a grand slam last night, smashed a 3-run HR to narrow the lead to 12-9. Then in the 9th with the bases loaded, Hunter LeBlanc was hit by a pitch, bringing one run home. Danny Lynch’s sac-fly plated another, and then, Montenegro walked it off with his 2-RBI single.

The win sets up a rematch with LSU tonight. The Tigers have yet to lose during the regional, meaning that USM will have to beat them twice to advance.
