The Mississippi Department of Transportation is reporting icy road conditions in the following areas this morning:
Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Carroll, Choctaw, Claiborne, Coahoma, Grenada, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Montgomery, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Warren, Washington, Webster, Winston, Yalobusha and Yazoo.
If you are in these areas, MDOT urges you to stay off the roads. Even if it appears that there is no ice, “black ice” could be present and cause your vehicle to lose traction, especially at high speeds.
If you are out on the roads today, remember the following tips to help you stay safe:
- Remember, ice will form on bridges and overpasses quicker than the road.
- Slow down; should winter weather conditions become present, “black ice” can form.
- Allow more space between the vehicle in front of you.
- Brake early and gently to avoid skidding, and never slam on the brakes.
- Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone.
- Stay alert.
