Two School Districts Step Closer to State Take Over

JACKSON, Miss. —  The State Board of Education has voted to ask Governor Phil Brant to declare states of emergency in the Claiborne and Leflore Counties school districts.

That would give the Department the green light to take over the two districts, moving out their superintendents and local school board members and moving in a conservator.  The board was also considering a takeover of the Yazoo City school system.  But members agreed Friday to give that district more time to fix some of its problems.  Leaders there have until March of next year to make the changes.  But, if the State Board of Education is not happy with the progress, they could move for a take over at any time.
