A hurricane watch is already in effect for the Mississippi Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Nate squares up for impact this weekend.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service are expecting Nate to strengthen to a category 1 hurricane as it churns into the open waters of the Gulf.
Eric Carpenter with the National Weather Service says you should definitely take Nate seriously. The angle of the storm’s approach will maximize it’s storm surge capabilities.
So far, Nate is expected to make a beeline for Louisiana and Mississippi, though local impacts will depend heavily upon the actual track he takes.
Heavy rain is expected inland as a cold front sweeps into the area, meeting the wet air brought in by the storm. Early estimates show possibilities of five inches or more throughout north and central Mississippi.
