HAVANA, Cuba–The current path of Tropical Storm Chantal has it headed toward the Lesser Antilles and Cuba. It may not end up affecting the Gulf of Mexico as a sharp northeast turn is expected as it approaches the Florida coast.
News Mississippi will keep an eye on any storm that has the potential to enter the Gulf and affect Mississippi.
Chantal was officially declared a tropical storm Sunday night and is moving west at 20 mph. There are several factors that make conditions for strengthening less likely, including dry air, according to the National Hurricane Center. But, warm seas in its path could still support further development.
The storm will first approach the Lesser Antilles Monday night.
