The National Weather Service encourages residents in storm zones to keep their phones on the charger as long as they can until the power goes out. During outages, the agency urges residents to keep refrigerators and freezers closed and to disconnect appliances to prevent surges.

After outages, NWS officials say any food exposed to temperatures above 40 degrees for more than two hours should be thrown out. Residents should wait 10 to 15 minutes to reconnect appliances upon the lights coming back on to allow the electrical system to stabilize.

Lastly, NWS says never touch a downed power line due to the possibility of electrocution.
