STURGIS, Miss.–After a month without a police department, the Town of Sturgis has hired a chief and two new police officers.
Last month when the new Board of Alderman was sworn in, they elected not to keep their last chief. He was effectively fired. When that happened the other officers immediately resigned.
Without a police department, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department increased patrols to make sure the residents were not without law enforcement. Some citizens complained about the lack of police.
The new chief, Doug Hamilton, was hired 10 days ago, according to WCBI. The town’s mayor says the other two officers hired were also candidates for chief and came recommended by Hamilton, who has 30 years experience with the Miss. Highway Patrol.
