After a couple of months of speculation and three weeks of fall camp, Mississippi State head football coach Joe Moorhead has made the quarterback decision for the 2019 season. It will be grad transfer Tommy Stevens behind center for the Bulldogs, as the announcement was made Thursday. Stevens committed to Mississippi State on May 17 after leaving Penn State following two seasons as All Big 10 quarterback Trace McSorley’s understudy, reuniting with Moorhead, who left Happy Valley a season ago after two years as offensive coordinator. Stevens beat out junior Keytaon Thompson, who has been the Bulldogs’ backup the past two seasons.
Stevens competed in 20 games as a Nittany Lion, completing 58% of his passes, and rushing for 506 yards, averaging nearly 7 yards per carry. He will look to spark a MSU offense that finished 13th in the SEC in passing yardage, a season that saw Nick Fitzgerald complete only 51% of his attempts. Stevens and the Bulldogs will kick off the 2019 campaign next Saturday against Louisiana in New Orleans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
