Some Mississippians are concerned that cursive may be on it’s way to extinction. Hence, a bill in the Senate (SB2273) that would require the teaching of cursive in public schools. The bill would provide for instruction enabling a student to create documents that can be read with legibility and understanding by the time that student reaches fifth grade.
News Mississippi asked several parents and teachers how they feel about cursive, and their responses were rather passionate:
Cursive is based on Spencerian script which was commonly used in the U.S. from the mid-1800s to around 1925. Spencerian script was considered the appropriate style of business correspondence until the typewriter came long, only to be usurped by the computer keyboard.
