RANKIN COUNTY, Miss.- Two chicken houses with nearly 12,000 chickens in each one caught fire early Tuesday morning at Buddy Farms in Rankin County.
Emergency officials said the fire spread quickly from one chicken coup to the second because the ventilation system kicked on due to the heat.
Van Latham, the farm owner, said about 22,000 chickens were killed in the fire. About 1,000 chickens were able to escape.
Latham told WAPT, he’s owned the facility for the past 13 years and this is a complete loss for his business.
Latham sells the eggs to Koch Foods who will pick up the surviving chickens.
Police are looking into what caused the fire.
