VICKSBURG, Miss.- The third barge in three days has crashed into the Mississippi River bridge.
The U.S. Coast Guard reports that the boat that was pulling the barge, Robert D. Byrd, ran into the Vicksburg Railroad Bridge around 8:00 Thursday morning. No barges broke free from the towing vessel.
The River is back open to traffic however the Vicksburg Railroad Bridge will stay closed until a safety inspection can be done by the Vicksburg Bridge Commission and the State of Mississippi. This is the third barge in three days to be involved in a collision.
The Coast Guard is looking into changes that can be made in order to reduce the safety risks on the waters.
