JACKSON, Miss. – Some of those suffering from sickle cell disease say they’re waiting too long to see a doctor at UMMC.
Those with sickle cell are also having to go to the ER after a clinic, which dealt with the disease, was shut down. The clinic was only opened 14 months before closing down this past August. Administrators with the hospital say they are going to re-open the clinic but are looking for a new location along with a nurse to run it.
It’s estimated that more than 2,000 Mississippians have sickle cell disease. Those who suffer from it tend to have painful blood-flow problems.
