William McKinley has taken over as Deer Program Coordinator for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and he stopped by the studio to talk to JT about what you should be looking out for this time of year, when it comes to deer. Does are already dropping fawns, so be careful when you bush-hog any land you might have, because does bed down their fawns until the fawn is physically capable of keeping up with their mother. You don’t want to kill a fawn with your bush-hog (and you might even mess up your equipment as well).
Also, if you see a fawn on the side of the road, leave it alone. The fawn’s mother is likely close by and keeping an eye on the baby. It doesn’t need your help, and removing the fawn could actually hurt the baby’s chances of reaching maturity.
McKinley also touched on the innovations you might be seeing when it comes to capturing and eliminating wild hogs in Mississippi.
