The Chattanooga Shooting: One of Mississippi’s First Family of Football, First to Help

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.–When the shooting happened at a military recruiting station in Chattanooga last week, one of the first people to try and help was Peyton Manning. Manning, quarterback for the Denver Broncos and member of Mississippi’s “first family of football” wanted to help the families of the military and police officers hurt or killed.

So, he started the Chattanooga Heroes Fund. It went up in 48 hours and was already raising money.

“Peyton was extremely moved by the tragedy,” said Pete Cooper, president of the fund. “And then he started talking to Sen. (Bob) Corker about how they could help.”

Manning went to college in Tennessee.

Cooper said money has been coming in steadily.

“The interesting part of this is the Islamic community is extremely supportive of this. They have a relatively small population in Chattanooga, but they have raised a significant amount of money.”
