SALTILLO, Miss.–Taking an elderly woman for hundreds of thousands of dollars in money and property are the charges against Dorothy Whitoman, 63, of Saltillo, and April Whaley, 24. The mother-daughter duo are accused of taking advantage of the woman who Whitmon was supposed to be caring for.
The victim had dementia, according to Atty. Gen. Jim Hood, and Whitmon is accused of taking $163,000 from the woman’s retirement and savings for herself.
She is also accused of getting the woman’s property put in her name. That property is worth about $200,000.
After all that, she’s also accused of withdrawing $33,000 with the woman’s bank card and using it herself.
Whaley, the daughter, is charged with one count of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. In other words, someone who can’t care for themselves. She could get ten years if she’s convicted.
Whitmon was charged with exploitation and embezzlement, and could get 20 years.
