JACKSON, Miss.–A change to the state constitution to change the Mississippi flag is what a group of about 200 people were supporting at the state capitol Sunday. The group included Civil Rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams and rapper David Banner.
South Carolina Rep. Jenny Horner made the trip from her home state to ask Mississippi to change its flag. Her state’s decision has led to a succession of calls for Mississippi to do the same.
“It’s incumbent upon our generation and the generation that comes behind us to stand up for equality and justice and to not back down in the face of opposition,” said Horne.
The opposition did not make a huge showing Saturday, but there were some who were there to support not changing the flag.
Rapper David Banner was all for change.
“Are you Confederate, which stands for slavery? Or are you southern? I’m southern ’til the day I die,” said Banner.
The group supports Initiative 55, which would force a change to the flag by a constitutional amendment.
