Mississippi officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday morning in George County, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Police with the George County Sheriff’s Department were first contacted about the suspect around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday after neighbors reported that the individual was making terroristic threats.
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), the suspect barricaded himself inside his residence on Jordan Road as law enforcement arrived at the scene.
A standoff between George County police, the Jackson County SWAT team, and the suspect lasted for over 16 hours before the individual became agitated with several of the officers.
The MBI reported the suspect exited his residence shortly after becoming angered and began shooting around 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday
In turn, officers shot at the suspect, who received fatal injuries that resulted in his death. The MBI is currently investigating the incident, which is the 12th officer-involved shooting in the state in 2023.
