JACKSON, Miss.- The Mississippi Supreme Court will hear arguments today on whether the state should recognize marriage between two women so they can be granted a divorce.
Lauren Czekala-Chatham and Dana Ann Melancon were denied a divorce in Desoto County in 2013.
They married in San Francisco in 2008 and could divorce in California, but Czekala-Chatham says she shouldn’t be treated differently than straight couples.
Mississippi has both a law and a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, but U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves overturned the state’s definition of marriage as only between a man and a woman after a legal challenge.
