A subpoena has been reissued with a different date for Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba to appear in front of the House Judiciary B Committee after the mayor recently missed a hearing to discuss the capital city’s surging crime rates.
Chairman Nick Bain, R-Corinth, released the following statement Thursday:
“Yesterday, I received notification from the mayor’s office that Mayor Lumumba is scheduled to be out of town attending a conference on November 17, the date he is subpoenaed to appear before the Mississippi House Judiciary B Committee.
Therefore, in a gesture of good faith to accommodate the mayor’s previous commitment, the mayor’s subpoena has been reissued, and the hearing has been rescheduled for Monday, November 21. As the mayor personally submitted the new date, we take this as a confirmation of his attendance. We look forward to his participation in addressing the issue of crime in our Capital city, of which he is the mayor.”
Lumumba missed the committee’s initial hearing on October 11. According to Bain, the mayor’s office reached out to him beforehand and informed him that Lumumba was sick.
