RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. – A four-year-old girl is fighting for her life at a Jackson hospital after the car she was riding in overturned in some water Sunday afternoon with her trapped inside.
Neighbors and a passerby jumped into the water, lifted the submerged vehicle and cut the child free from her child restraint before emergency responders arrived at the scene. Investigators said the child was unresponsive, but a deputy and by stander performed CPR; and after about 4 minutes the child began to breathe on her own. She and her mother were taken to the hospital where the child was listed in critical condition. Doctors estimate she had been underwater for over five minutes.
Update: The girl has been identified as 4-year-old Helena White.
