Monday classes at Jackson State University have been canceled after a student was killed on campus late Sunday night.
According to WLBT, Jaylen Burns was shot around midnight at the University Pointe Apartment Complex. Burns, an industrial technology major from Chicago, was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
It’s the second night in a row a shooting took place on campus. On Saturday night, two individuals not affiliated with the university fired guns on Dalton Street with one suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Following that shooting, interim Jackson State President Dr. Elayne Hayes Anthony extended additional security measures that had been implemented for this past weekend’s Homecoming.
“At the direction of Dr. Elayne Hayes Anthony, acting president of Jackson State University, a security plan was implemented for homecoming that included an increased security presence and checkpoints to enter campus for the Homecoming weekend. Those measures will continue,” school officials announced.
The university is asking students to report any concerns they have to the Jackson State University Department of Public Safety. Both shootings are still under investigation.
