JACKSON, Miss– 40 MDOT employees are making their way to the unemployment line. The State Workers’ Alliance says the layoffs aren’t the answer.
From towing the the line to the unemployment line. Forty Mississippi Department of Transportation workers will be making that transition due to layoffs. State Workers’ Alliance Brenda Scott says it’s a growing problem.
“Here we go again sending people to the unemployment line,” says Scott, “MDOT employees now join Department of Education employees at the unemployment office, and there’s still work to be done.”
Scott says that layoffs shouldn’t be an option.
“The agency and the state could have found another resolution,” says Scott. She says it is at moments like these that should remind state workers what the purpose of the union is.
“We try to educate state workers to vote for legislature that will stand with them,” Scott says, “but it is apparent every day that we’ve fallen away from that. There is no compassion for state workers in Mississippi.”
