As the calendar year nears its end, Mississippi Treasurer David McRae is touting a record-breaking 2024 in returning unclaimed money to residents.
McRae says in 2024 alone, his office has given $40 million to those who had not received funds owed to them by the government. This marks the most money returned to Mississippians in a single year, per the treasurer’s office.
A large sum of unclaimed money was sent to rightful owners in the weeks nearing the Christmas holiday. Checks totaling $4 million were mailed out to residents statewide. These checks were mailed automatically after background assessments were conducted to ensure the right amount was sent to the correct proprietor.
“Since swearing in, I have made returning money back to Mississippians a priority,” McRae said. “This money belongs to residents, not the government. It is the State Treasury’s job to return the money to its rightful owner.”
According to McRae, returning money to Mississippians, on this scale, is largely credited to changes in procedure and technology upgrades the state treasury made throughout the last four years. During McRae’s time in office, the treasury’s unclaimed property department has returned nearly $120 million.
