Gov. Tate Reeves has declared a state of emergency as Mississippi braces for a prolonged period of freezing temperatures.
The state of emergency, signed by Reeves on Saturday before going into effect Sunday with a Wednesday end date, warns that the incoming weather may “pose a threat to the life and safety of the residents of the impacted areas.” It also reassures state assistance to support the response and recovery efforts of local governments.
An arctic front is expected to sweep across the U.S. during the early parts of the week. According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the Magnolia State is expected to see frigid conditions beginning Sunday with snow expected in most parts of the state on Tuesday. Temperatures could be below freezing for up to three straight days.

MEMA also warns that roads may become treacherous in some areas of the state as the frigid conditions move through. The state agency encourages people to stay home if possible.
