43 counties and 120 towns/municipalities are behind in paying their assessment money to the state of Mississippi. When someone pays a traffic ticket, for example, there is an assessment on the ticket. Money that is supposed to go to the state to fund programs like those for fallen officers and Crime Stoppers.
The State Auditor’s office began auditing cities and counties around the state last year and found thousands in unpaid assessments. Stacey Pickering’s office says it has collected $383,463.25 to date, but there are still thousands that haven’t been paid.
Mr. Pickering broke the news on The Gallo Radio Show Monday morning and talked about the nearly $69,000 owed by the city of Tchula.
