The Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen has voted to change the speed limit from 25 mph to 15 mph on Government Street between Washington Avenue and Russell Avenue.
Cars typically parked on both sides of the popular downtown street already make for a narrow roadway and with a speed limit of 25 mph, it can sometimes be dangerous for not only pedestrians but other drivers. City leaders and community members hope the new speed limit will change that.
“There are a lot of pedestrians that are local and from all around the state and our region who come and are here to have a good time in our downtown,” Ocean Springs businessman Joe Cloyd said. “To the extent that we can make it safer for pedestrians in those high-traffic areas, I think it’s a great step in the right direction.”
The new speed limit is effective immediately.
