JACKSON, Miss. – A three judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments about Mississippi’s same-sex marriage ban January 9 in New Orleans.
Lesbian couples and a gay-rights group sued the state earlier this year over Mississippi’s constitutional amendment that says marriage is only a union between one man and one woman. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves overturned the ban November 25. But same-sex couples cannot marry in Mississippi while the state appeals the decision.
The 5th Circuit’s Justices will also hear similar gay marriage ban cases from Louisiana and Texas on the same day as Mississippi’s case.
