Southern Miss head men’s basketball coach Jay Ladner suffered a heart-related medical emergency on Tuesday morning, per a release from the university.
While details are slim, athletics director Jeremy McClain did issue a statement saying Ladner is expected to make a full recovery, but will step away from the team for the time being.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jay and his family as he works to make a full recovery,” McClain said. “We will continue to support our coaches and student-athletes at the highest level while he is away from the team.”
Players were made aware of the situation earlier in the day. The Golden Eagles (12-11, 6-5 Sun Belt) will be led by associate head coach Juan Cardona while Ladner is out. The team’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday at home against Old Dominion.
Health issues have now struck both sides of the university’s basketball program as women’s head coach Joyce Lee-McNelis was diagnosed with cancer before the start of the season. She has continued coaching while undergoing treatment.
