Ray Guy is the first athlete to be named into the Pro Football Hall of Fame from Southern Miss. Friday, Feb. 7 Southern Miss will take a night out to recognize the former USM and Oakland Raider’s athlete.
Guy was a unanimous All-American selection in 1972 as a senior in college. The Oakland Raiders selected him with the 23rd overall pick for the first round of the NFL Draft in 1973. Some consider Guy one of the greatest punters of all time and has been a 7 time finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was elected in on Feb. 1 this year. He is the second kicker and first pure punter to be honored for this award.
The Southern Miss Alumni and Athletic Department will host a reception and have a meet and greet from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Trent Lott Center at the Hattiesburg campus. Snacks and refreshments will be served with a brief program scheduled at 6:30 p.m.
He will also be introduced during the halftime of the basketball game. The game begins at 8 p.m. The reception is free and basketball game tickets can be purchased online or by calling USM’s ticket center.
