HATTIESBURG, Miss.- Just in time for the big Masters Tournament this weekend, Southern Miss Senior Casey Fernandez probably has his eyes on the big show as well. The first round of the Masters Tournament teed off Thursday in Augusta, Georgia. It’s the biggest golf tournament of the year, known for the Green Jacket donned by it’s champion every tournament. There are many big names playing in the tournament, such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Dustin Johnson. These guys are the best in the business.
Speaking of best in the business, as far as Conference USA golfing goes, the best in the business very well may reside in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Casey Fernandez won his third tournament of the season this week, and his second Golfer of the Week honor on Wednesday. He became the first Golden Eagle since the 01-02 season to win multiple tournaments in a season, and just the sixth all-time.
He won the Old Waverly Collegiate Classic, hosted by Mississippi State, finishing the final round at 11 under par, which is the 3rd lowest in school history. The senior also had 16 birdies for the tournament while leading the tournament in par five scoring at 10-under par.
This is also the third award for Southern Miss this season, as Hayes Weathersby picked it up in March, the first time Southern Miss has won three Golfer of the Week Awards in one season.
