Southern Miss bounced back from Friday’s loss with a 7-2 win to eliminate Auburn from their home regional.
Christopher Sargent got the Golden Eagles off to a hot start with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, giving USM an early 3-0 lead.
Shortstop Dustin Dickerson would build upon the team’s momentum with two solo shots — one in the third inning and another in the fifth inning — putting Southern Miss up 5-0. A Rodrigo Montenegro sacrifice fly would score Danny Lynch and add another run to USM’s lead.
The Tigers attempted to claw back into the game in the bottom of the sixth, adding two runs, but the Golden Eagles’ pitching staff would ultimately get out of the inning without allowing any more damage.
Lynch would give USM an insurance run in the eighth inning to seal the game. Tired Auburn bats were unable to respond in the final two innings of play.
RHP Billy Oldham was credited with the win after giving the Golden Eagles 5.2 innings and a strikeout. Will Armistead closed for USM and struck out three batters in the process.
Southern Miss will play the loser of Samford and Penn on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
