Following a 22-hour delay, Southern Miss (46-18) came out Sunday morning and solidified a 5-3 win over Tennessee in game one of the 2023 Hattiesburg Super Regional.
Despite allowing three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Southern Miss added a run to help secure their first chance to earn an NCAA College World Series berth since 2009.
Southern Miss quickly brought in Justin Storm for Will Armistead after the Golden Eagles allowed two runs and loaded the bases upon resuming play from Saturday.
Even though Storm allowed a single, the left-hander got USM out of the inning holding onto a 4-3 lead and followed with four scoreless innings, three strikeouts and an insurance run to help Southern Miss to the win.
The insurance run was provided by outfielder Tate Parker, who doubled in the top of the sixth inning and scored on a single from second baseman Nick Monistere.
Game two will start at 2 p.m. CT with Southern Miss pitching ace Tanner Hall (12-3), who has not lost since April and has 119 strikeouts this year.
