HATTIESBURG, Miss– At the height of football season and the week of homecoming for the Eagles, the NCAA is investigating claims of benefits given to Prop 48 students during Donnie Tyndall’s reign as head coach.
Giving benefits such as paid tuition to students who don’t qualify for the academic scholarship is why the basketball program at the University of Southern Miss is being investigated by the NCAA. An article by the Bleacher Report states that Tyndall may have been giving proposition 48 students benefits such as paid tuition. Prop 48 students are those that do not qualify for academic assistance, but are allowed to enroll in classes until they do have the necessary grade point average to start getting scholarships.
Southern Miss Athletic Director Bill McGillis tells WDAM “The university is working together with the NCAA to review potential issues related to our men’s basketball program. In order to maintain the integrity of our joint process, and pursuant to NCAA policy, we cannot comment further regarding any details of our review at this time.”
