South Mississippi schools close ahead of Gordon

Schools are closing ahead of Tropical Storm Gordon. Many districts have said that they will be closed on Tuesday, while some have also made the provision for being out on Wednesday in anticipation of the storm which could reach Hurricane status when it is expected to hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast Tuesday evening.

Bay-Waveland School District

All classes canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4th and 5th.

Biloxi School District

Classes canceled for Tuesday, September 4th.

George County School District

All classes canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4th and 5th.

Greene County School District

All Greene County schools will release students early Tuesday at 1 p.m. A decision about Wednesday classes will be made later. 

Gulfport School District

All classes canceled for Tuesday, September 4th.

Hancock County School District

All classes canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4th and 5th.

Harrison County School District

Classes canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4th and 5th.

Jackson County School District

JCSD is canceling all classes Tuesday, September 4th. (That’s a change from the previously announced plan to have a 60% day.) The district will make an announcement later regarding Wednesday classes.

Long Beach School District 

All classes canceled for Tuesday, September 4th.

Moss Point School District

The Moss Point School District will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, September 4, 2018. A decision regarding Wednesday, September 5th will be made by Tuesday by 12 p.m.

Ocean Springs School District 

Ocean Springs is canceling all classes Tuesday, September 4th. (That’s a change from the previously announced plan to have a 60% day.)

The homecoming parade has also been canceled, due to rain. School leaders will announce by 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning concerning any changes that may need to be made to the schedule for Wednesday, September 5th.

Pass Christian School District

All classes canceled for Tuesday, September 4th.

Pascagoula-Gautier School District 

The Pascagoula-Gautier School District will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 4. A decision regarding whether classes will resume on Wednesday, September 5th will be made by Tuesday at noon. 

Pearl River County School District

All Pearl River County Schools will release early on Tuesday, September 4th.

The elementary school & Endeavor School will release at 11:45 a.m.
The middle & high school will release at 12:45 p.m.

School officials said that decision on Wednesday’s school day, Sept. 5, will be made and communicated to everyone by 12:00 noon tomorrow, Sept. 4.

Poplarville School District

Poplarville will be dismissing school early Tuesday, September 4th at 1:00 pm. A decision on Wednesday classes will be made before noon on Tuesday.

Stone County School District

The Stone County School District has issued a 60% day for Tuesday, Sept. 4

 

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College

MGCCC is closing all campuses and centers on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and Wednesday, Sept. 5. That includes all activities and events. But all essential personnel need to report to work Tuesday at their regularly schedules times. The Perkinston campus dorms will remain open.

Pearl River Community College

All PRCC locations will close at noon on Tuesday, September 4th and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 6th. Dorms will remain open.

University of Southern Mississippi-Gulf Coast

Southern Miss’s Gulf Coast campus will be closed on Tuesday, September 4th.

“The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast operations along the Gulf Coast, including the Gulf Park Campus and the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 4, in preparation of predicted severe weather from Tropical Storm Gordon,” said a statement on their social media page. “All Tuesday day and night classes on the Gulf Coast will not meet, and faculty and staff, with the exception of essential personnel, are not expected to report to work.”

Operations on the Hattiesburg campus are scheduled to begin as usual on Tuesday morning, but the campus will close at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday night classes will not meet.
