Smoking Indoors in Mississippi May Be Out the Window in Public Places

Jackson–It’s a petition to ban smoking indoors. The Mississippi State Medical Association has joined forces with other organizations to petition the ban of public indoor smoking.

No more smoking section unless you take it outside. That’s what Mississippi State Medical Association petition supporters hope for. The Hattiesburg American reports that the petitions will be in doctor’s offices across the state. When MSMA gets enough signatures, they’ll present it to the State Legislature and hope to do so in January.

These ordinances are nothing new in Mississippi, but many feel that not enough is being done.

” “We’ve learned that municipalities are passing ordinances in our state and making great progress in protecting our Mississippians, but only 24% is covered under the smoke-free law,” says Jennifer Cofer, vice president of Public Policy at the American Lung Association.

Cofer says Mississippi still has a long way to go and the petition is just the first step.
