Three people are confirmed to have passed away and four are suffering from injuries following the collapsing of a bridge in Simpson County.

Officials with the Mississippi Department of Transportation report that a bridge over Strong River on Highway 149 caved Wednesday afternoon during what is being called a work site accident. T.L. Wallace, the contractor for the project, was in the process of demolishing the bridge, MDOT stated.

Simpson County Sheriff Paul Mullins confirmed the deaths and injuries.

The bridge has been closed since September 18 as part of a replacement project. The identities of the deceased and injured have not been released at this time.

More details will be provided when made available.
