As the southeastern U.S. continues to be thrashed by a historically strong line of hurricanes, some may be wondering how they will get to the polls for Election Day on November 5.
The Mississippi Secretary of State’s office is reminding those aiding in recovery efforts – particularly emergency first responders – of their ability to vote absentee.
Under Mississippi’s Armed Services Absentee Voting Law, any voter serving as a trained or certified emergency response provider responding to a state of emergency on Election Day qualifies as a Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act voter and may vote absentee.
“We talk about the idea of making it easy for people to go vote – making it convenient,” Secretary of State Michael Watson said. “If you can’t get to the polls on Election Day, we have absentee voting. It’s so easy to vote in Mississippi.”
If a first responder will be away from home on Election Day and did not vote absentee prior to deployment, a Federal Post Card Application can be submitted to utilize the SafeVoteMS portal.
