On Saturday, fans of an adult cartoon show dressed up like their favorite characters and drove to the nearest participating McDonald’s, in the hopes of getting their hands on a limited edition packet of Rick and Morty Szechuan McNugget dipping sauce. “Rick and Morty” is a series loosely based on and spoofing Doc and Marty from Back to the Future, and in the 3rd season premiere back in April, the titular Rick and Morty made their way to a dimension that is stuck in 1998. While visiting Dimension C-1998M, the show reminds viewers of an obscure sauce that was offered as part of a promotion for Disney’s Mulan, the elusive McDonald’s Szechuan McNugget sauce, that was only available for a short time in 1998. McDonald’s got fans of the Cartoon Network show excited when they announced that they would be giving out special edition packets of Szechuan sauce(as well as posters and stickers) on Saturday, October 7th, but when fans arrived, they discovered that McDonald’s hadn’t anticipated the level of enthusiasm surrounding the show or the sauce, sending only about 20 packets of sauce and a handful of posters to each participating McDonald’s stores. Angry customers got so rowdy when they didn’t get a packet of Szechuan sauce that police had to be called to several McDonald’s locations. If you’re just as confused as JT, listen to Ryno try to explain the phenomena below. Oh and Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!
